Energy Clearing

Five classic methods for clearing a 'heavy' space — each with a different origin. Right one depends on your element.

  • White sage

    Indigenous North American traditions

    How

Burning end up. Walk from corners toward the front door. Open a window. 5–10 minutes.

    Caution

Source sustainably — some species are over-harvested. Alternatives: rosemary, bay leaf.

  • Palo santo

    Andean South American cultures

    How

Hold it, light the tip, blow out the flame. A thin smoke should rise. Walk the room clockwise.

    Caution

Palo santo is protected — look for FSC-certified or naturally fallen wood.

  • Sea salt

    Mediterranean + Japanese traditions

    How

Sprinkle a handful at the entrance. Wait 24 hours. Sweep it out.

    Caution

Don’t pour on stone or hot surfaces — it stains. Sweep outdoors.

  • Sound (bell, gong, hands)

    Tibetan + Indian traditions

    How

Clap or ring three times in each corner of the room. Let the sound open the space.

    Caution

If anyone — including animals — is sound-sensitive, keep distance.

  • Breath + intention

    No tradition; the simplest

    How

Sit upright in the middle of the room. 3 deep breaths. Say "This space is clear" out loud. Let go.

    Caution

    None.

Note: opening a window is 70% of energy clearing — scent, sound, and salt have ritual value, but the real mechanism is air exchange. Tradition knows this; the practice is sophisticated, not superstitious.
