Definition
Almuten, from Arabic "al-mu'tameen" — "the most trustworthy / most powerful." It's the method of calculating which planet has the highest essential-dignity score over a particular zodiacal degree. It counts not only rulership, but exaltation, triplicity, term, and face all together. The classical sum of five essential dignities: rulership 5 points, exaltation 4, triplicity 3, term 2, face 1. Whoever has the most points — that's the Almuten of that degree. Almuten Figuris is the "central ruler" of the entire chart; the synthesis of all the key points' almutens. Modern psychological astrology had forgotten this technique; it returned after Project Hindsight (1993).
In practice
Almuten clarifies "who rules this topic" in a chart. If the ascendant is at 15° Leo, it's not just "Sun rules" — exaltations, terms, etc. all count, and another planet may emerge stronger. Required for classical horary, deepens natal interpretation.
