What it is

Vertex is a mathematical point — the intersection of the ecliptic and the prime vertical (the great circle perpendicular to the local horizon). Every natal chart has a Vertex (usually in houses 5-8) and its opposite Anti-Vertex (usually in 11-2). L. Edward Johndro flagged it in the 1930s; Charles Jayne popularized it in the 1970s. Astrologer observation: a planet transiting conjunct or opposite the Vertex brings a meeting "where you feel fate's hand." In synastry: when A's planet is conjunct B's Vertex — the relationship is lived as "not coincidence," it carries a sense of being formed under unexpected conditions. Modern psychological astrology adopted this concept; classical tradition doesn't use it. Debated technique (not every astrologer uses it).

How to read it

What sign and house is your natal Vertex in? That's the sign of your "appointment with fate" theme. In synastry: if your partner's planet falls on your Vertex, the relationship is lived as a non-recorded encounter.
