What it is
The lunation cycle is tracking the ~29.5-day cycle from one New Moon to the next through charts. Each New Moon chart — cast for that moment's sky — shows the "collective emotional theme" for the next 29 days. A mundane astrologer casts a new-moon chart each month, examining which house and sign it falls in and which planets it aspects. New Moon in Leo: a month themed around stage, visibility, creation; in Scorpio: themes of deep change, financial test. Full Moon charts give the same cycle's "peak" moment. One of classical tradition's basic mundane techniques; modern psychological astrology adapts it for personal life-tracking too.
How to read it
For monthly planning: cast the new-moon chart (for your city). What sign + house? What area is activated this month. A planet in trine/sextile = soft support; square/opposition = challenge. The Full Moon ~14 days later peaks the cycle.
