The Conjunction Aspect (0°): The Language of Merging Planets
An aspect is the angular distance between two planets in a birth chart; it answers the question of where two points sit relative to each other on the sky’s 360-degree circle. Astrologers do not read these distances at random, but according to specific geometric ratios. This geometry between two planets describes how their energies speak to each other, clash, or cooperate.
In classical astrology there are five major aspects, known as the Ptolemaic aspects: the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition. Among them, the strongest and most fundamental is the conjunction. That is because in a conjunction the two planets sit at the same point, almost on top of one another; the distance between them is so small as to be negligible. For this reason the conjunction is like the moment when two separate voices merge into a single choir.
In this guide we take a step-by-step look at what the conjunction aspect is, why it is considered both the most intense and the most difficult aspect to read, how it works in the birth chart and in the sky’s current movements (transits), and how it takes on different flavors with different planetary pairs.

What Is the Conjunction Aspect?
A conjunction is the situation in which the angle between two planets approaches 0 degrees. In other words, the two celestial bodies fall on the same degree of the chart’s circle—and most often in the same sign—so that to an observer they appear side by side, even on top of each other. It is shown with the symbol ☌.
The most defining feature of the conjunction is merging. Instead of working separately, the two planets pool their energies together. In a Mars-Mercury conjunction, thought and impulse interweave; in a Venus-Jupiter conjunction, love and abundance blend together. The planets become inseparable from each other’s color and quality; for this reason the conjunction can be thought of as a blend, an alloy.
The accepted orb for the conjunction—that is, the tolerance range within which the aspect is considered valid even when it is not exactly 0°—is usually quite wide, around 8-10 degrees. When the bright luminaries such as the Sun and Moon are involved, this range can widen even further. The closer two planets are to an exact 0°, the sharper and more dominant the conjunction feels; as the orb widens the effect softens, yet it still persists.
An important distinction: a conjunction is not simply a matter of being in the same sign. Two planets may be in the same sign while one sits at the beginning of the sign and the other at the end; in that case the degree gap is large, so the conjunction weakens or fails to form at all. What truly matters is not the sign, but the closeness of the degrees.

The Energy of the Conjunction
The core function of the conjunction is to intensify and blend. Planets that come together amplify each other’s influence; a far stronger, far more focused force emerges than either planet would produce alone. For this reason a conjunction acts as a point of emphasis in the chart, a center where a person’s energy is concentrated.
By its very nature the conjunction is a neutral aspect. It does not automatically produce tension like the square and opposition, nor automatic flow like the trine and sextile. Whether the outcome is sweet or challenging is determined by the temperaments of the planets involved. When two friendly planets (for example Venus and Jupiter) meet, a harmonious, joyful union is born; when two naturally tense planets (for example Mars and Saturn) meet, a frictional, constricted energy may arise.
Another face of the conjunction is invisibility. Because two forces this close dissolve into one another, a person often cannot perceive this energy as separate parts; instead they take it to be an ordinary, unquestioned feature of their own personality. This makes the conjunction one of the most powerful yet least consciously recognized aspects.

The Conjunction in the Birth Chart
In the birth chart, a conjunction is a fixed theme etched into a person’s character. The areas of life represented by those two planets can no longer be thought of separately. For someone with a Mercury-Venus conjunction, for example, communication and aesthetics walk hand in hand; their speech is graceful, their expression artistic. This blend is carried with the person for a lifetime.
The house and sign in which the conjunction falls show where and in what style this concentrated energy will find expression. A conjunction in the tenth house gathers around career and public identity, while the same conjunction in the fourth house reveals itself in the realm of family, roots, and private life. The house sets the stage of the energy; the sign sets the acting style.
A dense conjunction in which three or more planets come together is called a stellium. A stellium turns that region of the chart into an extraordinarily powerful center of gravity; a significant part of a person’s life revolves around this area. Such a concentration can be both a great gift and a burden that ties life too tightly to a single theme.

The Transit Conjunction Aspect
A transit conjunction occurs when a planet moving through the sky comes exactly over a planet or sensitive point in your birth chart. This is like the beginning of a cycle: the moment a seed is planted in the soil, when a new process quietly sprouts. Transit conjunctions are generally the heralds of fresh beginnings, a new awareness, or a theme suddenly coming to the fore.
Every planet has its own cycle, and the conjunction is the zero point of that cycle. When Jupiter conjuncts your transiting Sun, a period of expansion, opportunity, and optimism may begin; when Saturn reaches the same point, a process of responsibility, maturation, and reckoning opens up. The fruit of what is seeded at the moment of conjunction becomes clear in the later phases of the cycle (the square, the opposition).
During transit conjunctions the effect strengthens as the planet approaches the exact degree and eases as it moves away. For this reason the most intense days of a transit conjunction cluster around the date on which the aspect perfects. Because the conjunction is neutral, how the process is experienced depends on which planet is arriving and on the condition of the planet in your birth chart.

The Conjunction Between Planets
The best-known example of a conjunction is the Sun-Moon conjunction; this is the very moment of the new moon in the sky. When the Sun and Moon arrive at the same degree, consciousness and emotion, intention and need unite in a single direction. The new moon has for centuries been valued for this very reason as the natural moment for new beginnings and for planting intentions.
The Venus-Mars conjunction is the merging of love with desire, of attraction with the impulse to act; it brings passion, creative energy, and a powerful magnetism. The conjunction of naturally harmonious pairs such as Jupiter-Venus amplifies themes of generosity, pleasure, and luck and is usually felt as easy. By contrast, the conjunction of tense pairs such as Mars-Saturn or Sun-Saturn may be experienced as the constriction and disciplinary pressure of carrying two opposing needs within the same body.
The rule that emerges from this is: whether a conjunction is good or difficult is told not by the aspect itself, but by the planets that meet. The same geometry turns into a gift with friendly planets and a test with conflicting ones. For this reason, when interpreting a conjunction, one must first look at which two forces have sat down at the table.

How to Work With the Conjunction Aspect
The greatest gift of the conjunction is focus. A person who can direct the energy of two merged planets toward a conscious aim carries a power and determination far beyond an ordinary influence. The first step is to notice this blend: which two of my themes are inseparable from each other? An honest answer to this question transforms the conjunction from a habit lived out blindly into a usable talent.
The shadow side of the conjunction is the loss of objectivity. Because the two planets dissolve into one another, a person struggles to tell them apart and to view them from the outside. For someone in whom mind and emotion are conjunct, for example, thoughts and feelings can become so intertwined that it grows hard to discern what is reason and what is feeling. This blindness is the most insidious trap of the conjunction.
For this reason, the way to work with a conjunction lies in holding up a mirror to it from the outside. Feedback from someone you trust, keeping a journal, or observing situations in which that energy is not dominant teaches you to distinguish the merged forces from one another. The aim is not to break apart the blend, but to know it well enough to manage it consciously.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Conjunction Aspect
- What does conjunction mean?
- A conjunction is when two planets in a birth chart arrive at almost the same degree, forming a 0° angle. In this case the planets combine their energies and act like a single powerful force. It is regarded as astrology’s most fundamental and most powerful aspect.
- How many degrees is the conjunction aspect?
- The conjunction is exactly a 0° angle; that is, the two planets are so close as to be on top of each other. In practice an orb (tolerance) of 8-10 degrees is accepted, and with luminaries such as the Sun and Moon this range can widen a little more. The closer the two planets are to 0°, the sharper the effect.
- Is the conjunction good or bad?
- On its own the conjunction is neither good nor bad; it is a neutral aspect. Its outcome is determined by the nature of the planets that meet. Harmonious pairs such as Venus-Jupiter produce a sweet effect, while tense pairs such as Mars-Saturn can create a challenging union.
- How is the conjunction aspect interpreted?
- First you look at which two planets are conjunct, because they set the tone of the aspect. Then you examine the house and sign in which the conjunction falls; this shows in which area of life and in what style the energy will find expression. A conjunction is always read as an intensification and a blending.
- Is a conjunction the same as being in the same sign?
- No. Two planets may be in the same sign, but if one sits at the beginning of the sign and the other at the end, the degree gap becomes large and no conjunction forms. In a conjunction, what matters is not the sign, but the closeness of degrees between the planets.
- What does a transit conjunction mean?
- A transit conjunction is when a planet moving through the sky comes over a planet in your birth chart. It is experienced as the beginning of a new cycle, the moment a seed is planted. Depending on which planet is arriving, themes of beginnings, opportunity, or responsibility come to the fore.
- What is a Sun-Moon conjunction?
- The conjunction formed when the Sun and Moon arrive at the same degree is the very moment of the new moon in the sky. Consciousness and emotion, intention and need unite in a single direction. For this reason the new moon is seen as a natural moment for new beginnings and for planting intentions.
- What is a stellium and how is it related to the conjunction?
- A stellium is a dense cluster formed when three or more planets are conjunct together. It turns that region of the chart into an extraordinarily powerful focal point. A significant part of a person’s life can take shape around this area.
- What is the challenging side of the conjunction?
- The greatest shadow of the conjunction is the loss of objectivity. Because the two planets dissolve into one another, a person struggles to tell them apart and to see them from the outside. This is why the conjunction is one of the most powerful yet least noticed aspects.
- Is the conjunction aspect a major aspect?
- Yes. The conjunction is one of the five classical Ptolemaic major aspects, and it is generally considered the strongest of them. The other major aspects are the sextile, square, trine, and opposition.
