How planets
speak to each other
Aspects are the angular relationships between the planets in a birth chart; they reveal a chart’s inner dynamics, its lines of tension and talent. Explore the five major aspects and the key minor ones in depth — what they are, how they work in the natal chart and by transit, and how to work with them.

About aspects
- What is an aspect?
- An aspect is the angular distance between two planets in a birth chart, and it shows how those two planets communicate. Some aspects flow easily and support each other (trine, sextile), others are tense and demanding (square, opposition), while the conjunction merges the energies. Aspects describe the inner dynamics of a chart — its lines of tension and talent.
- Which aspect is good and which is bad?
- Calling aspects "good" or "bad" is misleading. Soft aspects (trine, sextile) bring ease and talent but invite complacency; hard aspects (square, opposition) push you, yet they are the engine of the greatest achievements and of maturity. A strong chart usually carries both kinds in balance.
- What does orb mean?
- Orb is the tolerance by which an aspect can deviate from its exact degree. For example, a square is 90°, but 84°-96° still counts as a square. Major aspects usually allow a 6-8° orb, minor aspects a tighter 1-3°; the closer to exact, the stronger the aspect works.
- What is the difference between major and minor aspects?
- The five major (Ptolemaic) aspects — conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition — form the backbone of the chart and carry the strongest effect. Minor aspects (quincunx, semisextile, semisquare and others) add subtler, fine-tuning undertones. In interpretation you read the majors first, then the minors.
