Meaning

The solar return chart is cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal position — it shows the atmosphere of the year ahead. Astrological tradition reads it as the "chart of the year"; what themes will emerge, which houses activate, which planets dominate. The same person calculating their solar return in different cities gets different charts — which is why some astrologers recommend choosing a location for the birthday ("astro-cartography"). The Sun is in the same place each year but its surrounding planet pattern differs — the yearly themes don't repeat.
