Founding of the Theosophical Society · Modern occult astrology's mother

What happened

Helena Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott founded the Theosophical Society in New York on November 17, 1875. Theosophy means "divine wisdom"; the society's aim was to fuse Eastern mysticism (Indian, Tibetan, Egyptian) with Western occult tradition. For astrology: Theosophy is the birthplace of modern psychological astrology. Annie Besant, Charles Webster Leadbeater, Alan Leo (who later left to found his own astrology publishing house) all passed through. Theosophy introduced the "personal evolution" concept into astrology — in Babylon and Lilly astrology was state/individual prophecy; after Theosophy it became "the journey of the soul." The occult-philosophical foundation of the 1900-1950 "new astrology" movement.

Why it matters

Today's still-used "Age of" rhetoric (Pisces → Aquarius), "soul age," "evolutionary astrology" — all from Theosophy. Modern astrology's philosophical DNA begins in 1875.
