Astrology App Boom
Astrology app boom · Co-Star, The Pattern, Sanctuary launch era
What happened
Between 2017-2020 digital astrology apps (Co-Star 2017, The Pattern 2017, Sanctuary 2018, ChaniApp 2020) spread massively to Gen Z and millennials. Co-Star alone reached 30 million downloads. The boom emerged from three streams: (1) the rise of astrology-talking podcasts (The Astrology Podcast since 2012), (2) social media's sign-centric humor (the #GeminiSeason meme genre), (3) Gen Z's pre-pandemic search for spiritual meaning. Result: astrology entered its fourth mass boom after 1930 (newspaper columns) and 1970 (personal astrology). This time mobile-native, daily-feed, AI-assisted, and especially as a feminine movement.
Why it matters
Today's astrology economy (apps, podcasts, courses, paid newsletters) shaped up across these 4 years. Co-Star's tone, Chani Nicholas's political-feminist voice — modern astrology's "daily language" comes from this period.
