Contribution

Valens wrote the most practical text of Hellenistic astrology. His Anthology is the counterpart to Ptolemy's theoretical Tetrabiblos: it teaches reading techniques through more than 130 real birth charts. His method: the chart is not a dry theory but a tool that looks at life. The central figure of the modern Hellenistic revival (1990s-today). The Greek text was translated and distributed in the 20th century by Robert Schmidt and Project Hindsight; that translation sparked today's "traditional astrology" movement. Valens especially developed the "time lords" system — which planet rules which years of life, a systematic calendar.

Why they matter today

The modern Hellenistic revival walks through Valens. Time-lord systems, teaching with example charts, the "chart isn't theory but practice" stance — all his legacy. Chris Brennan's 2017 book is built entirely on Valens' method.
