Contribution

Al-Biruni was one of the Islamic Golden Age's most capable polymaths — astronomy, astrology, mathematics, geography, anthropology. The Kitab al-Tafhim is his introduction to astrology, written as Q&A to a student. Combines scientific discipline with astrological technique — known for his skepticism, yet did not fully reject astrology; rejected its fanatical use. His work compares Greek + Indian + Persian astrological traditions. Lived for years in India, learned Sanskrit, translated Indian knowledge into Arabic — the first genuine comparative study in astrology's history. The modern formulation of sidereal vs tropical zodiac distinction also rests on his work.

Why they matter today

The founding figure of comparative astrological study. The earliest deep questioner of "can astrology be scientific?" Modern astrology-science dialogue still uses his language.
